Pinewood Derby Trophies

The last time my boys had their Pinewood Derby for scouts, their scout master/pack leader/man-with-more-patience-than-anyone-should-be-required-to-have wanted each boy to walk away with a trophy. A trophy per boy may not be in the budget but some wood and paint were.

Here is a more detailed picture so you can see what went into it.

The top of each trophy stand had a felt pad glued on so the car won’t slide off easily. And, as you can see, it fits the car perfectly. Not only did they get a trophy for the event with their name on it, they got a keepsake stand for their cars.

Such a great idea, I wish I thought of it myself.

  1. Wow, it must have taken a lot of time to put all those together. I’m sure the boys will appreciate them for years to come, though. We’ve been looking at getting a couple pinewood derby supply kits for some of our boys, and now I’m thinking that maybe all the leaders can get together to build some trophy stands. Thanks again for sharing.

  2. So, I built these for my pack this year. They are trickier than they look. Most of mine are crooked. I tried to make a jig to hold everything together straight while I attached them to each other, but I failed. And, the are extremely top heavy which makes them a bit unstable. If I make them again next year, I’m going to find a way to weight the bottom. In spite of these difficulties, they were a big hit.

  3. I precut the wood and but I’m going to have the boys assemble and paint them and wood burn their names into them and then I’m going to add the award they add at the derby to the center of each one that night for them to then take the whole thing home. I’ll let you know how it goes.
