I am having an insane love affair with the cashew gelato from Organic Nectars called Cashewtopia. The best part? I can enjoy it without risking a serious belly ache (which, lets be honest, is sometimes worth it for ice cream).
I know people are always letting you down with, “Even if I ate dairy, I’d still think this was delicious.” LIES! But in this case it’s true. This stuff is literally amazing! It’s way better than your standard grocery store dairy gelato or ice cream like Breyer’s or Edy’s. They all have that sort of powdery texture, like they’re full of air.
While maybe not quite as delectable as fresh, gourmet or homemade whole milk gelato, cashew gelato is leagues above other vegan ice cream subs (not that there aren’t other good ones). It has the creamy smoothness of frozen custard, with an underlying tangy flavor similar to frozen yogurt.
This brand uses organic agave rather than sugar, so it’s not quite as guilty a pleasure. I’m not sure where I stand on the hot topic of whether or not agave is good for you, but I know for a fact that white sugar and additives are not, so when I occasionally eat my store bought ice cream, it’s not strictly for the health benefits. However, it is nice when I find a good one that’s allergy friendly, organic, and has some nutritive properties.

Vanilla bean and Cherry Chocolate Swirl are tied for my favorite flavor, but I also love Chocolate Hazelnut, and I swear that used to have an espresso flavor that was wonderful. The pistachio is okay, but the pistachio chunks are soggy. Want to feel like you’ve died and gone to heaven? Try the vanilla over a warm brownie. Mmm…
You must try it for yourself, then please comment and let me know what you think! I’m going to try making my own cashew milk ice cream soon, so I’ll keep you posted! If you make it and have a favorite recipe, please share!
